Before express shipment by air, many towns had an area near the ocean or a river, down by the train tracks or out near the highway, where produce was shipped out or delivered. Often unofficially referred to as “Lettuce Avenue,” these areas were home to warehouses, loading docks, trains, trucks, noise, and activity, where a vital component of life, food, was collected and distributed.
To celebrate this history of honorable work and energy in service of a basic necessity, we have called our enterprise Lettuce Avenue Design, and our mission is to advocate for applying design principles to the solving of social problems, renewing good ideas from the past and across cultures, generating and promoting new concepts, methods, and solutions.
